Ibankhopeful asked:

I have a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and currently working as a Supply Chain Management Consultant at a reputable consulting firm. My plan is to get an MBA in finance and corporate strategy, to acquire solid finance education, but my experience is mostly in Supply Chain. I want to break into banking Post-MBA, and would like to know if I have a legitimate shot at doing so, even without finance experience. I might be able to gain 3-4 months of finance experience at an internship-which is required at most top-tier business schools. Please help.

Thinking about starting an advisory firm, question about fee structure?

I am looking at starting an investment advisory firm and I had a thought for a tiered fee structure where the fees actually decrease as my assets under management increase.

I am curious what every one out there thinks about this idea.

Our Puffy National Embarassment, Al Gore, heads a company that sells carbon offsets. Is he the next PT Barnum?

Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe, she said…

Gore is chairman of the firm and, presumably, draws an income or will make money as its investments prosper. In other words, he “buys” his “carbon offsets” from himself, through a transaction designed to boost his own investments and return a profit to himself. To be blunt, Gore doesn’t buy “carbon offsets” through Generation Investment Management - he buys stocks.
Don c, LOL did you just burst a vein in your neck?

What are the job functions of someone who is a director of asset management at an asset management firm. Is the job description the same as a director of equity research, and are the skill sets transferable to investment banking?

Also, what are some comparable titles or similar positions at other financial firms?

Thanks!

DC Financial Planning Firm that Hires Attorneys?

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008
RoKnows asked:

Does anyone know of a financial planning firm where most planners/advisors are attorneys? I DO NOT MEAN traditional wirehouse and mainstreet firms like Morgan Stanley, Smith Barney, Ameriprise etc. Similarly, I DO NOT MEAN a traditional white shoe law firm that has “investment management” or “estate planning” as practice areas. I specifically am wondering where I might find an attorney/financial planner who works on a fee basis, as opposed to commissioned-based sales reps that churn in and out the door of all the typical name brand firms.

From Standard&Poor’s Equity Research. ACTION ECONOMICS: The dollar traded lower through Monday’s N.Y. session, as financial and credit concerns trumped slightly better than expected ISM and construction spending data. Fresh problems for the dollar arose overnight, when U.K. based Bradford&Bingley announced a quarterly loss, a resigning CEO, and a capital influx from a U.S. private equity group. N.Y. dealers were then met with news that both Wachovia and Washington Mutual shook up their management teams, while later, S&P downgrades of the financial sector as a whole took the dollar, and U.S. equities to their lows of the day. EUR-USD rallied about 100 points through the session, peaking near 1.5590, while USD-JPY stumbled from highs of 104.85, to base at 104.00.”
“Thompson, 57, is the latest financial services executive to be ousted amid turmoil in the U.S. housing market.

He joins Stanley O’Neal at Merrill Lynch & Co. and Charles Prince at Citigroup Inc., who both presided over huge losses from exposure to bad mortgages, and were subsequently forced out from their perches at the top of Wall Street institutions.

Also Monday, Seattle-based Washington Mutual Inc. stripped Kerry Killinger of his chairman title, though he remains the chief executive officer at the nation’s largest savings and loan.

“We will likely see more changes in top brass at institutions hit particularly hard by the subprime mortgage crisis,” said Eva Weber, an analyst with Aite Group, a Boston-based financial services research firm. “As more losses are incurred, and boards of directors scrutinize decisions around mortgages, we will likely see shifts in management.”

U.S. bank shares were also under pressure following a broad descent Monday in the European banking ”

My wife is looking to take a position with a competitor. however that competitor emerged from Ch11 about a year ago. they are still held by a management/investment firm. they have reorganized…but still feel a bit wiery. I **** to invest the 401K in the company you work for because your paycheck depends on them, your retirment shouldn’t…so that’s not the issue. The company has been in business for over 85 years….but has had troble as of late. Still has over 420 stores nationwide….any thoughts on the subect?
the 40K isn’t the issue at all…can roll that over. I am talking about job security-wise. The company had to remit its public shares and is not owned primarily by a managment company. The mangement company has a great track record with its investments.
they did totally restructure. The current CEO/COO is the former president of her current emploer….
