Is a job in operations for an investment bank or portfolio management firm a good route to becoming a trader?

I want a career in money management (like owing a hedge fund).but not sure where to start?
Thursday, December 18th, 2008I’m currently a freshman at a public university in Colorado, and want to have a career in money management. Ideally I have a dream of owning my own hedge fund(s), investment business, real estate firm…all the bases. I’m just not sure where to start.
I want to get into the money management for it seems exciting and fun to me. I’ve read up on what it’s like and what it pays. I think my biggest desire to do it however is so I can be well off financially sooner than later so I can enjoy my life…vs working all the time to make ends meet.
I’m down as a finance major, but not sure if the school I’m at would be of any help down the line since it’s not ranked anywhere.
I own my own small business that I started as a teenager in middle school and still run it part time to help pay for school. Any Colorado schools have a good rep in business/finance for what I want to do? I’d sell the business if needed, so if not in Colorado, what school(s) would you recommend?
Thanks!
Would DU (University of Denver) be a good local pick? What about CU Boulder (University of Colorado at Boulder)? Or are neither of these good enough?
Degrees or Qualifications for Financial analyst (Corporate, Investment Banking)?
Thursday, November 27th, 2008I hold a bachelor degree in Finance, have one year experince as a financial analyst at investment bank firm, my job involves conducting feasibility study, build financial models (Income statement, Balance sheet, Cash flow statement, and computing WACC, IRR, NPV, and other fin. ratios).the company services includes debt raising and M&A. Last June I took the CFA level 1 exam and didn’t pass. Before knowing my result, I decided not to continue as i found that CFA focus more on portfolio management, which I’m not interested in at all. Now my problem is that I feel that I need to take some qualifications (for knowledge and promotion purposes) my office mates are going to take the CFA this June, and my boss is a big fan of CFA. I don’t want to take CFA and don’t want to be “less” than my officemates. so my questions:
1- what are my options?
2- what about MBA or MBA Islamic finance
3- what do you think of the CFQ (http://www.cfqualification.com/whatiscf/)
4- Am I right about not taking CFA?
5- Advice me please
Please take into consideration that:
1- I’m a female, hence does not want to be called at midnight to do some work.
2- like the idea of freelance job
yah and what about MSc in corporate finance?
MBA vs. MS in Finance?
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008Can I become an Investment Banker graduating from a top tier B-school with NO relevant experience in finance?
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008I have a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and currently working as a Supply Chain Management Consultant at a reputable consulting firm. My plan is to get an MBA in finance and corporate strategy, to acquire solid finance education, but my experience is mostly in Supply Chain. I want to break into banking Post-MBA, and would like to know if I have a legitimate shot at doing so, even without finance experience. I might be able to gain 3-4 months of finance experience at an internship-which is required at most top-tier business schools. Please help.
How important is the financial health of the corporation you work for?
Friday, October 3rd, 2008My wife is looking to take a position with a competitor. however that competitor emerged from Ch11 about a year ago. they are still held by a management/investment firm. they have reorganized…but still feel a bit wiery. I **** to invest the 401K in the company you work for because your paycheck depends on them, your retirment shouldn’t…so that’s not the issue. The company has been in business for over 85 years….but has had troble as of late. Still has over 420 stores nationwide….any thoughts on the subect?
the 40K isn’t the issue at all…can roll that over. I am talking about job security-wise. The company had to remit its public shares and is not owned primarily by a managment company. The mangement company has a great track record with its investments.
they did totally restructure. The current CEO/COO is the former president of her current emploer….

Did I make a mistake by going into Management Consulting instead of Investment Banking?
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008I’ve been a management consultant for a while and worked for some pretty well known firms - however I’ve always wondered about investment banking. I’ve accepted that life as an investment banker would be difficult for the first several years but the salaries these guys get is phenomenal. I can’t even fathom getting a bonus of $100,000
I chose consulting instead of finance because I thought financial people made cold calls all day (just like the guys from ‘Boiler room’ or ‘Wall Street’) but I think that was just a foolish assumption. I also thought you had to be a Harvard MBA to be successful in Finance but all those people paying top dollar for apartments in NYC can’t be Ivy League guys, can they??
Did I make a mistake choosing consulting instead of finance? I think anyone could put up with long hours if it meant millions of dollars in compensation!
Is it just a case of the grass being greener?
